If you’re looking to explore the natural wonders surrounding Uniontown, there are several great destinations nearby.

Wawawai County Park

A short drive from Uniontown, Wawawai County Park offers an easy walk with breathtaking views of basalt rock formations. Take Old Wawawai Road from Colton and enjoy a scenic descent into the canyon. The park features a shaded picnic area beneath large oaks, and a tributary for fishing. You can head back through Pullman or extend your drive along the river toward Clarkston.

Klemgard Park

Klemgard Park offers a 1-mile loop hike that’s perfect for a quick workout. The park also boasts a playground, volleyball courts, and a large grassy area. It’s a picturesque drive with farmhouses and diverse scenery as you head north on 195 toward Colfax, following signs for Klemgard.

Kamiak Butte

For a more challenging hike, Kamiak Butte offers a 3.5-mile loop with 900 feet of elevation gain, providing stunning views of the Palouse and the nearby towns of Pullman and Moscow. It’s a beautiful 40-minute drive from Uniontown, and you can top off the day with BBQ at Palouse Caboose or a glass of wine at Merry Cellars.

Moscow Mountain

Just outside Moscow, this is a popular spot for hiking and mountain biking. If you’re interested in biking, consider renting a high-end bike from Paradise Creek Bicycles in Moscow. After your ride, the Moscow Co-op is a great place to refuel with local produce and healthy options.

Hells Gate State Park

Located along the Snake River in Lewiston, ID, Hells Gate State Park offers various trails with stunning views of the river and Hells Canyon. Keep an eye out for wildlife and enjoy the expansive views from the bluff. After your hike, stop by Ernie’s Steakhouse in Lewiston for a burger with a view of the Lewis-Clark Valley.

Our region is home to two notable American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) offering excellent wine experiences.

Columbia Valley AVA

The largest and most well-known AVA in Washington, the Columbia Valley, is home to several local gems:

Wawawai Canyon Winery: Just a block from the Barn, this local winery has been crafting wines since 2004. Stop by Thurs-Sat from noon to 6 PM for a taste and a chat with winemaker Ben Moffet. Visit their website.

Merry Cellars: Located in Pullman, Merry Cellars offers a relaxing patio and exceptional service. A staple of the Palouse, they’re open Mon-Sat from noon to 6 PM. Learn more.

Lewis-Clark Valley AVA

Established in 2016, this AVA spans the picturesque canyons and plateaus near Lewiston, ID, and Clarkston, WA:

Rivaura Winery: Situated just 25 minutes from Uniontown, Rivaura offers stunning views of the Clearwater River. Their wines and on-site brews make it a must-visit. Winter hours: Wed-Thurs 12-6 PM, Fri-Sat 12-7 PM, Sun 12-5 PM. More info.

Clearwater Canyon Cellars: Located in Lewiston, this winery is known for producing some of the best wines in the region. Visit Tues-Sat, noon to 5 PM. Explore more.

Plan Your Wine Tour

For a scenic and enjoyable wine tasting experience, we recommend starting at Clearwater Canyon in Lewiston, then heading to Rivaura, and finally ending the day with a visit to Merry Cellars in Pullman and Wawawai Canyon Winery in Uniontown. The total drive time is around 2.5 hours, with plenty of time to enjoy each stop.

Uniontown may be small, but it’s packed with history and interesting sights if you take the time to explore.

The town was settled in 1867 by Thomas Freeborn Montgomery, a real estate businessman known for his contentious personality. His conflicts with local business owners led many to relocate north to Colton. Montgomery’s legacy remains in Uniontown—our main street still bears his name. He met his end in a dispute on December 8, 1888.

Another historical gem is St. Boniface Church. Built in 1905 and consecrated in 1910, it was the first consecrated church in Washington State. Its brick structure, stained glass windows, and domed architecture are remarkable for a town of our size. The church still holds services every other Sunday.

A Walking Tour of Uniontown

Start your tour with a visit to Memorial Park and the town’s two graveyards. The Catholic St. Boniface Cemetery is on the north side of the access road, while the other is for non-Catholics. The most infamous site is the Wurzer children’s grave, where six children, tragically drowned by their mother Rosa Wurzer in 1901, are buried.

Next, head north to the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn, our beautifully restored artisan space that houses art studios, a gallery, and offers classes. The Barn is also famous for its wagon wheel fence, dating back to the 1930s. Originally a dairy barn, it was donated by the Dahmen family and transformed into an artisan hub through community support. Today, it’s our lively center for arts, music, and culinary events.

From the Barn, stroll over to St. Boniface Church, and don’t miss the old convent next door, now a private residence.
