my process for June

This piece is part of a new body of work. This is an acrylic painting on paper, using various palette knives and a brayer to apply and spread the paint to a large sheet of heavy charcoal paper. Dabbing the paint directly on the paper and some times spritzing with water, sometimes scratching through the layers, gives interesting effects, textures, and depth. Unpredictable shapes, swooshes, and visual energy happens. Once I am happy with the composition, I wrap the paper around a stretched canvas.

Usually, I am looking for harmony in the chaos. For this composition specifically, I went a bit lighter in color and texture. This is a floral inspired composition, invoking petals and spring time, and yet black brings it darker and more serious.
